FLOWERS are yellow, tubular, 20-30mm long, foetid-smelling, the swollen base trapping pollinating insects; borne in clusters (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are green and pear-shaped. LEAVES are heart-shaped and strongly veined. STATUS-Rare and declining; a relict of cultivation for midwifery.

  • Swift Apus apus L 16-17cm. Invariably seen in flight: has anchor-shaped outline and mainly dark plumage. Catches insects on the wing. Sexes are similar. Adult has mainly blackish brown plumage with pale throat. Tail is forked but often held closed in active flight. Juvenile is overall darker but throat and forehead are paler. Voice Loud screaming calls uttered in flight. Status Locally common summer visitor. Nests in churches and loft spaces. Feeding birds gather where insects are numerous.

  • Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata L 14cm. Charming, perky bird with unremarkable plumage. Recognised by upright posture and habit of making insect-catching aerial sorties from regular perches. Sexes are similar. Adult has grey-brown upperparts, streaked on crown, and pale greyish white underparts heavily streaked on breast. Juvenile is similar but has pale spots on back and dark spots on throat and breast. Voice Utters a thin tsee call. Song is simple and includes thin, call-like notes. Status Widespread summer visitor to open, sunny woodland, parks and gardens; often nests around habitation.

FLOWERS are white; borne in spikes on stalks that are much longer than leaves (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are capsules. LEAVES are reddish, rounded, stalked and 1cm across; covered with sticky hairs that trap insects and appear as a basal rosette. STATUS-Widespread and locally common.

  • Purple Hairstreak - Neozephyrus quercus - pupa. Wingspan 38mm. A rather enigmatic butterfly that can be hard to observe closely. As an adult it usually remains close to the top of the mature tree where its life-cycle began. Lives in colonies. Adults have brown upperwings; males have purple sheen on both wings, in females it is restricted to hindwings. Underwings are grey with hairstreak line. Larva is brown and rather slug-like; feeds on oak buds. Widespread but locally common only in southern England and Wales.

  • Swallowtail - Papilio machaon ssp. britannicus - larva. Wingspan 70mm. Iconic and unmistakable butterfly with mainly yellow and black wings; hind wings have blue and red spots, and tail streamers. Double-brooded: adults are on the wing May–June, and again in August. Larva is yellow-green with black and red markings; feeds on Milk-parsley. Restricted to a few fens and marshes in East Anglia, mainly in the Norfolk Broads; easiest to see at Strumpshaw Fen and Hickling Broad.

  • Small Copper Lycaena phlaeas Wingspan 25mm. A colourful butterfly associated with open, grassy habitats. Adult has striking orange upperwings, variably marked with dark brown; underwings have similar pattern to upperwings but grey-buff replaces the dark brown. Has two or three broods: seen on the wing May-September. Larva feeds on Sheep’s Sorrel. Locally common in undisturbed meadows, grassy heaths and sea cliffs.

  • Purple Emperor Apatura iris Wingspan 65mm. An impressive and iconic butterfly of broadleaved woodlands with tall oaks and mature Goat Willows (the larval foodplant). Adult has brown upperwings marked with a white band; the male has the purple sheen, only seen at certain angles. Underwings of both sexes are chestnut with a white band. Flies July-August. Larva is green with diagnostic ‘horns’ at head end. Rare and local, restricted to a few good woodlands in southern England.

Adult has a buff head and silvery-grey wings with a buff patch at the tip. Flies May–July. Larva is yellow and black, with bristly hairs. Feeds on deciduous trees including oaks and limes. Widespread and common in lowland Britain.
