  • Blue Tit Parus caeruleus L 11-12cm. Familiar garden and woodland bird. Sexes are similar. Adult has greenish back, blue wings and yellow underparts. Mainly white head is demarcated by dark blue collar, connecting to dark eyestripe and dark bib; cap is blue. Bill is short and stubby and legs are bluish. Male is brighter than female. Juvenile is similar but colours are subdued. Voice Call is chattering tser err-err-err. Song contains whistling and trilling elements. Status Common resident of deciduous woodland, parks and gardens. Observation tips Tit One of the easiest birds to see. Often visits garden feeders.

  • BLUE WATER-SPEEDWELL Veronica anagallis-aquatica (Scrophulariaceae) Height to 25cm. Hairless perennial with creeping stems that root at the nodes, and upright flowering stems. Grows in damp ground, in woodlands and marshes, and also around the margins of shallow ponds. FLOWERS are 5-6mm across, the corolla 4-lobed and pale blue; in dense spikes that comprise pairs of flowers on stalks arising from leaf axils, the stalks as long as the bracts (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are flattened, rounded and notched capsules. LEAVES are narrow-oval, pointed, toothed and up to 12cm long. STATUS-Locally common.

Flies low over water on whirring wings. Excavates nest burrow in riverbank. Sexes are separable. Adult male has orange-red underparts, mainly blue upperparts with electric-blue back. Legs and feet are red and bill is all-dark. Adult female is similar but base of lower mandible is flushed red. Juvenile is similar to adult but bill tip is pale. Voice Utters high-pitched call in flight. Status Widespread resident of streams and lakes, commonest in lowland areas.

The flowers are blue and 15-20mm across; they are borne in small, terminal clusters (Jul-Aug). It grows in damp grassland and is native to N and W Ireland; elsewhere in our region it is naturalised.

  • OYSTERPLANT Mertensia maritima (Boraginaceae) Prostrate. Spreading plant found on stony beaches, around the high-tide mark. Shetland and Orkney are the best British locations for the species and it is very locally common. It can be recognised by its fleshy, blue-green leaves and bell-shaped flowers that are pink in bud but soon turn blue (June-Aug).

  • Starling Sturnus vulgaris L 20-22cm. Familiar urban and rural bird with swaggering walk. Forms large flocks outside breeding season. Sexes are separable in summer. Adult male in summer has dark plumage with iridescence seen in good light. Legs are reddish and bill is yellow with blue base to lower mandible. Adult female in summer is similar but has some pale spots on underparts and pale yellow base to lower mandible. Winter adult (both sexes) has numerous white spots adorning dark plumage and dark bill. Juvenile is grey-brown, palest on throat; bill is dark; spotted body plumage acquired in winter. Voice Varied repertoire of clicks and whistles including mimicry. Status Widespread and common but declining. Found in all kinds of open habitats in winter. Often nests in house roofs.

The flowers are purplish blue and funnel-shaped; they are borne in curved clusters (Jun-Sep). This species grows on dry, sandy ground and is also found, very locally, in W Cornwall.

Roughly hairy annual, found on disturbed and often sandy soils. FLOWERS are 5-6mm across and blue; borne in clusters (May-Sep). FRUITS are egg-shaped nutlets. LEAVES are narrow, with wavy margins; lowers are stalked, upper ones clasp the stem. STATUS-Widespread and locally common in E England; becoming scarcer elsewhere.

  • TUFTED FORGET-ME-NOT Myosotis laxa (Boraginaceae) Height to 12cm. Branched perennial that lacks runners. Grows in damp ground. Note the appressed hairs on the stems, leaves and calyx. FLOWERS are 3-4mm across with rounded blue lobes, the calyx having pointed teeth; in clusters (May-Aug). FRUITS are nutlets. Fruit stalks are 2-3 times calyx length. LEAVES are oblong. STATUS-Common and widespread.

  • WATER FORGET-ME-NOT Myosotis scorpioides (Boraginaceae) Height to 12cm. Creeping perennial with upright flowering stems. All stems are angular and covered in close-pressed hairs. Grows in watery habitats on neutral and basic soils. FLOWERS are 8-10mm across, 5-lobed and sky blue with a yellow ‘eye’; borne in curved clusters (Jun-Sep). FRUITS are nutlets. Fruit stalks are longer than calyx. LEAVES are narrow, oblong and unstalked. STATUS-Widespread and locally common throughout.
