  • Coal Tit Parus ater L 10-11cm. Tiny, well-marked and warbler-like bird. Sexes are similar. Adult has white cheeks and white nape patch on otherwise black head. Back and wings are bluish grey and underparts are pale pinkish buff. Note two white wingbars and dark, needle-like bill. Juvenile is similar but colours and markings are less striking. Voice Utters a thin call. Song is repeated teechu-teechu-teechu…, higher pitched and more rapid than Great Tit.<br />
Status Fairly common resident of conifer forests and mixed and deciduous woodland.

  • Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiacus L 65-72cm. Striking Shelduck-sized bird. In flight, bold white patch on inner wing useful for identification. Bill and legs are pink. Sexes are similar. Adult has grubby white head and neck; pale eye is surrounded by dark patch. Orange-buff breast is clearly separated from paler neck and darker, grey-buff belly; note small, dark patch on centre of breast. Back is dark grey-brown; note white and chestnut on wing, seen in resting birds. Juvenile is similar but colours are duller; dark breast spot and patch around eye are absent. Voice Mostly silent. Status Introduced from Africa but now well established and increasing. Usually seen near water, often on nearby grassland.

  • Ring Ouzel Turdus torquatus L 25-26cm. Upland counterpart of Blackbird. Typically alert and wary. Sexes are dissimilar. Adult male has mainly black plumage with striking white crescent on breast and pale fringes to wing feathers. Legs are dark, bill is yellowish, and feathers on underparts have pale fringes. Adult female is similar but dark elements of plumage are browner and pale crescent on breast is grubby white. 1st winter birds look rather dark with pale feather fringes all over and hint of adult’s pale crescent on breast. Voice Utters a harsh tchuck alarm call. Song comprises short bursts of fluty phrases. Status Local summer visitor to rugged moorland and lower mountain slopes.
