  • SCOTTISH ASPHODEL Tofieldia pusilla (Liliaceae) Height to 20cm. Upright, delicate and hairless perennial that is easy to overlook. Grows in damp ground and bogs, mainly in mountain regions. FLOWERS are 2-3mm across and greenish white with 3 blunt lobes; borne in dense, rounded spikes on slender stems (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are capsules. LEAVES are iris-like and borne in a flat, basal fan. STATUS-Restricted to Scottish Highlands (where it is fairly widespread) and Upper Teesdale.

  • Scottish Crossbill Loxia scotica L 15-17cm. Very similar to Common Crossbill and extreme caution is needed with identification. Scottish has more robust and stout bill than Common, suited to extracting seeds from Scots Pine cones. Sexes are dissimilar. Adult male is mainly red with brownish wings. Adult female is mainly greenish with brownish wings. Immature birds are similar to adults of respective sexes but duller. Juvenile is grey-brown and streaked. Voice Utters a sharp kip-kip-kip flight call, deeper than that of Common. Status Found nowhere else in world other than native Scots Pine forests in Scotland.

  • White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla - Juvenile. W 190-240cm. Immense raptor with long, broad and parallel-sided wings, and by relatively short, wedge-shaped tail. Surprisingly manoeuvrable, despite it size, and catches fish and waterbirds while hunting low over water. Sexes are similar. Adult has mainly brown plumage, palest on head and neck. At rest, white tail is often obscured by wings. Bill and legs are yellow. In flight from below, looks mainly dark except for paler head and neck, and white tail. Juvenile is similar to adult but looks darker overall and tail is uniformly dark. Subadult acquires adult plumage over successive moults; last immature feature to disappear is dark terminal band on tail. Voice Utters mournful whistling calls. Status Formerly just a rare visitor from mainland Europe but now reintroduced successfully to certain Scottish islands.

A low-growing and often rather prostrate undershrub. BARK Reddish brown. BRANCHES Short and upright or spreading, with stiff, hairy twigs. LEAVES Rather rounded, 6-8mm across, coarsely toothed and hairy when young, smooth and hairless when mature. REPRODUCTIVE PARTS Catkins, females covered with three-lobed scales. STATUS AND DISTRIBUTION A northern, tundra species in global terms, confined in our region as a native plant to the Scottish Highlands. Here, it grows on upland heaths and in bogs and is tolerant of both waterlogged and relatively free-draining peaty soils.

  • Crested Tit Lophophanes cristatus L 11-12cm. Easily recognised by its conspicuous crest. Sexes are similar. Adult has striking black-and-white barred crest. Note black line through eye and bordering ear coverts on otherwise mainly whitish head. Black throat and collar demarcate head. Upperparts are otherwise brown and underparts are buffish white. Bill is narrow and warbler-like. Juvenile is similar but duller. Voice Utters a high trilling call. Song is rapid series of call-like notes and whistles. Status Very local resident, restricted to ancient Caledonian pine forests and mature Scots pine plantations in Scottish Highlands.

  • Large sitka spruce in Glen Affric, Scottish Highlands, Uk. Sitka Spruce Picea sitchensis (Pinaceae) HEIGHT to 52m. Large conical evergreen tapering to a spire-like crown. Trunk is stout and buttressed in large specimens. BARK Greyish-brown, becoming purplish and scaly in older specimens. BRANCHES Ascending with slightly pendent, hairless side-shoots. LEAVES Needles, to 3cm long, stiff and flattened with a distinct keel, bright green above with 2 pale-blue bands below; appear crowded on upper surface of shoot, with lower surface more exposed. General impression is of tough, sharply spined, blue-green foliage on a sturdy tree. REPRODUCTIVE PARTS Female cones are yellowish and small at first, growing to about 9cm, becoming cylin¬drical and shiny pale brown, covered with papery toothed scales. STATUS AND DISTRIBTION Native of high-rainfall areas on W coast of North America. The largest spruce species and some specimens, guarded in National Parks, have reached heights of 80m. Introduced to our region and widely planted for commercial forestry and sometimes for ornament.

  • ALPINE SAXIFRAGE Saxifraga nivalis (Height to 20cm) is a tough little perennial with glandular hairs on the purplish stems and margins of the leaves, which are purplish below. The flowers are white or pink and borne in terminal clusters (Jul-Aug). It is a rare plant of the Scottish Highlands, and also occurs, extremely rarely, in England, N Wales and W Ireland.

  • DWARF CUDWEED Gnaphalium supinum (Asteraceae) Height to 10cm. Tufted, compact and greyish-green perennial that grows on damp ground in mountains, and typically found on acid soils. FLOWERS are borne in small, compact and brown heads, fringed by bracts; heads are carried in clusters (Jul-Aug). FRUITS are achenes. LEAVES are narrow and woolly on both sides, the upper ones surrounding the flower heads. STATUS-Very locally common only in the Scottish Highlands.

FRUITS are flattened, oval and slightly notched capsules. LEAVES are oval and blunt-toothed. STATUS-Scarce, restricted to Scottish Highlands.

  • ALPINE FORGET-ME-NOT Myosotis alpestris (Height to 25cm) is a tufted perennial that recalls Wood Forget-me-not but which is much shorter and with deep blue (not pale blue) flowers (Jul-Sep). Its main British location is the Scottish Highlands but it is also found in Upper Teesdale.

FLOWERS are 5mm across, bell-shaped, deeply lobed and pink; either solitary or borne in clusters (May-Jun). FRUITS are capsules. LEAVES are thick, opposite and oblong with down-rolled margins. STATUS-Found mainly in the Scottish Highlands and locally common only in the Cairngorms.

  • SCOTS LOVAGE Ligusticum scoticum (Apiaceae) Height to 80cm. Robust and hairless perennial; often forms sizeable clumps. Stems are ribbed and purplish and hollow towards the base. Found on cliffs, and stabilised grassland that fringes rocky and shingle shores. FLOWERS are white and borne in flat-topped umbels, 4-6cm across, on long, reddish stalks (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are oval and flattened, with 4 wings. LEAVES are bright green, shiny and 2 times trifoliate with oval leaflets and inflated, sheathing stalks. STATUS-Locally common on Scottish and N Irish coasts.

  • Dotterel Charadrius morinellus L 22cm. Beautiful and tame, pot-bellied mountain wader. Role-reversal seen when nesting: duller male incubates eggs. Adult female in summer has reddish orange breast and belly, black-bordered white collar, and blue-grey throat. Face is whitish and has white supercilium and dark cap; upperparts otherwise grey-brown, back feathers with brown margins. Legs are yellow. Adult male in summer is duller. Winter adult is grey buff with broad, pale buff supercilium and pale breast band. Juvenile is similar to winter adult but with scaly-looking back. Voice Utters a soft pierrr call. Status Rare migrant visitor, mainly to Scottish Highlands. Migrants linger briefly at traditional hilltops staging posts in England, or on coasts.
