Unmistakable pelagic fish. Ventures into inshore waters in summer months, along with Mackerel. Adult has a very slender body and long pointed jaws, armed with sharp teeth. Dorsal, anal and tail fins are set far back on body. Green above, silvery on sides and white below. Locally, and seasonally, common, mainly in S and W.

Adult has wedge-shaped tail and pointed streamers. Sexes are similar but adults occur in two morphs. Adult pale phase has white neck, breast and belly, dark cap and otherwise grey-brown plumage. Note faint yellowish flush on cheeks. Adult dark phase is uniformly dark grey-brown. Juvenile is dark rufous brown. Voice Utters nasal calls near nest. Status Local summer visitor to Scottish coasts; coastal passage migrant elsewhere.

  • Mackerel Scomber scombrus Length to 55cm<br />
Fast-swimming predatory fish. Shoals are frequent in inshore waters in summer months and popular with anglers. Adult has streamlined body, pointed head and rather small dorsal fins. Small ‘finlets’ extend along top and bottom of narrowly tapering tail stock. Body is greenish with black bands above, silver on sides and whitish below; green colour fades to blue after death. Widespread; locally and seasonally common, especially in S and W.

  • Common EelAnguilla anguilla Length to 100cm<br />
Similar to Conger Eel but with subtle structural differences. Found in freshwater for much of life but also on rocky shores and in estuaries. Adult is yellowish for much of life, but turns silvery-blue as adult before migration. Compared to Conger note relatively smaller eye, protruding lower jaw, and dorsal fin that starts 1/3 of way down body. Widespread but rather scarce, numbers much reduced in recent years.

  • Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus (L 42-50cm) shares some plumage similarities to Arctic Skua but is appreciably larger, with deep, powerful wingbeats, and long, spoon-shaped tail streamers in adults. Two adult forms occur: dark morph (uniformly dark) is seldom seen while pale morph is more regular; it has white neck and belly, dark grey-brown upperparts, yellow-flushed cheeks and a dark breast band. Juvenile has variably barred dark, grey-brown. Outer Hebrides and NW Ireland are migration hotspots for Pomarine Skuas.

  • Puffin Fratercula arctica L 30cm. Endearing seabird. Flies on narrow wings with whirring wingbeats. Swims well and dive frequently for fish. Sexes are similar. Adult in summer has mainly dark upperparts with dusky face; underparts are white. Legs are orange-red and bill is huge, flattened and marked with red, blue and yellow. In winter, similar but with dark grey face and smaller, duller bill. Juvenile is similar to winter adult but with small, dark and dull bill. Voice Utters groaning calls at nest. Status Locally common. Only comes ashore in breeding season. Colonial nester, excavating burrows in grassy cliffs. Only storm-driven, sick or oiled birds are seen near land in winter.

  • Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea L 35cm. Graceful seabird with buoyant flight. Plunge-dives for fish. Sexes are similar. Adult has grey upperparts, black cap, and pale underparts, palest on cheeks, darkest on belly. Has uniformly red bill, short, red legs and long tail streamers. In flight from below, flight feathers look translucent, with narrow, dark trailing edge to primaries. Juvenile has white underparts, incomplete dark cap and scaly grey upperparts. In flight from above, has dark leading edge, and white trailing edge, to inner wing. Legs and bill are dull. Voice Utters harsh krt-krt-krt call near nest. Status Locally common summer visitor and passage migrant. Colonial nester, always near coasts; commonest in N.

Widespread and fairly common, least so where fished commercially.
