  • LATE SPIDER-ORCHID Ophrys fuciflora (Height to 50cm) is superficially similar to both Bee Orchid and Early Spider-orchid. It differs from the former in its broader, less rounded lip, the tip of which has a green, upturned appendage; from the latter it is told by its pink, not green, outer perianth segments. It is restricted to chalk downs in Kent.

Perennial of dry grassland, mainly on calcareous soils. FLOWERS have pink sepals and green upper petals; lower petal is 12mm across expanded, furry and maroon with variable, pale yellow markings (vaguely bumblebee-like). Borne in spikes (Jun-Jul). FRUITS are egg-shaped. LEAVES are green and oval, forming a basal rosette, with 2 sheathing leaves on stem. STATUS-Locally common only in England, Wales and S Ireland.

Garrigue and stony ground, eastern Mediterranean only.
