  • Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola L 19-21cm. Elegantly proportioned wader. Legs are yellowish and relatively longer than those of similar-sized cousins. Has pale supercilium and, in flight, note white rump and barred tail. Sexes are similar. Adult has brownish, spangled upperparts. Head and neck are streaked and has faint streaks and spots on otherwise pale underparts. Juvenile is similar but upperparts are browner and marked with pale buff spots. Voice Utters a chiff-chiff-chiff flight call. Status Widespread and fairly common passage migrant, found mainly on freshwater pools near the coast; more rarely inland. Handful of pairs breed in bogs in Scottish Highlands.

  • Swift Apus apus L 16-17cm. Invariably seen in flight: has anchor-shaped outline and mainly dark plumage. Catches insects on the wing. Sexes are similar. Adult has mainly blackish brown plumage with pale throat. Tail is forked but often held closed in active flight. Juvenile is overall darker but throat and forehead are paler. Voice Loud screaming calls uttered in flight. Status Locally common summer visitor. Nests in churches and loft spaces. Feeding birds gather where insects are numerous. Observation tips Easy to see in late spring in villages and towns. Most adults leave Britain in August.

  • MIRROR ORCHIDOphrys speculumHeight up to 20cm Attractive perennial with colourful and distinctive flowers. Flower spike comprises 2-8 flowers. These have greenish, narrow-oval sepals, often lined with purple. Petals short, hairy and purple; lip is 10-12mm long, 3-lobed with a shiny-blue speculum bordered with yellow and fringed with maroon hairs. Found in open woodland, maquis and garrigue; flowers March to May. Widespread around Mediterranean and locally common; absent Crete and Cyprus.

  • Carp Cyprinus carpio Length 25-80cm<br />
Carp are introduced to Britain but long-established in lakes and flooded gravel pits across the region. The ancestral form has a golden-olive colour and even-sized scales; so-called Leather and Mirror Carps are variations with variable size or missing scales. All carp feed on bottom-living invertebrates and plants.
