  • Orkney Vole Microtus arvalis orcadnesis Length 12-17cm Confined to Orkney. Introduced, but has been present on those islands for at least 5,000 years and lives on moors and coastal cliffs. Also occurs on mainland Europe where it is known as Common Vole. Although absent from, and not native to, most of Britain, it occurs as an ancient introduction to two far-flung island chains; here it has evolved into distinct subspecies.

  • Sargent’s Cherry Prunus sargentii (Rosaceae) HEIGHT to 13m. Open, spreading tree. BARK purple-brown, rather glossy and ringed with horizontal bands of lenticels. BRANCHES Ascending or spreading; dark-red twigs are thin and smooth. LEAVES To 15cm long, ovate with a long-pointed tip, sharply toothed margins and a 2–4cm-long petiole; smooth on both surfaces. REPRODUCTIVE PARTS Flowers are pale pink, on 1–2cm stalks in clusters of 2–4, opening just before leaves, usually in April. Petals are up to 2cm long. Fruits (rarely seen here) are ovoid, to 1.1cm long, and dark crimson. STATUS AND DISTRIBUTION Native of Japan and Sakhalin Islands; widely planted here.

  • Canary Palm Phoenix canariensis Height to 25m. Typical palm, native to Canary Islands but widely planted elsewhere in areas with a Mediterranean climate. Leaves are pinnate and 4-5m long, with up to 100 leaflets. Flowers are produced in sprays and fruits are  oval, yellowish drupes containing a single, large seed.

Has a tall, straight trunk that extends to top of tree. BRANCHES Numerous branches, spreading or only slightly ascending. LEAVES Oval, with uneven base. REPRODUCTIVE PARTS Papery fruits. STATUS AND DISTRIBUTION Native to Guernsey, probably introduced to other Channel Islands, and occasionally planted in mainland England too.

Attractive, cushion-forming perennial that often carpets suitable coastal cliffs. Sometimes also grows in saltmarshes and, to a lesser extent, it is also found on a few mountain tops. FLOWERS are pink and borne in dense, globular heads, 15-25mm across, that are borne on slender stalks (Apr-Jul). FRUITS are capsules. LEAVES are dark green, long and narrow. STATUS-Widespread and locally abundant; mainly coastal.

  • Hoopoe Upupa epops L 25-28cm. Distinctive, with long, downcurved bill. Habit of creeping along ground often makes it hard to spot. In flight, however, unmistakable thanks to bold black-and-white bird pattern and butterfly-like flight. Sexes are similar. Adult and juvenile are mainly pale pinkish brown with black and white barring on wings and back; white rump is seen in flight. Erectile crest of barred, pink feathers is raised in excitement. Voice Utters diagnostic hoo-poo-poo call. Status Has bred here, but best known as scarce visitor in spring and autumn.

  • Smew Mergus albellus - Adult winter male. L 38-44cm. Elegant little diving duck. Male is stunning and unmistakable. Female might be confused with grebe in winter plumage. Sexes are dissimilar. Adult male looks pure white at a distance but close view reveals black patch through eye and black lines on breast and back. In eclipse (not seen here) resembles adult female but retains more extensive white on wing. Adult female, Juvenile and 1st winter birds (so-called ‘Redhead’ Smews) have orange-red cap and nape, white on cheek and throat, and grey-brown body. Voice Silent. Status Occasional and unpredictable winter visitor. Turns up on flooded gravel pits, reservoirs and lakes.
