Showy perennial of waste ground, cleared woodland and riverbanks, on a wide range of soil types. FLOWERS are 2-3cm across with pinkish purple petals; borne in tall spikes (Jul-Sep). FRUITS are pods that contain cottony seeds. LEAVES are lanceolate and arranged spirally up the stems. STATUS-Widespread and common throughout.
