131829 GREAT MULLEIN Verbascum thapsus (Scrophulariaceae) Height to 2m. Robust, upright biennial that is covered in a thick coating of white, woolly hairs. Grows in dry, grassy places, on roadside verges and waste ground. FLOWERS are 15-35mm across, 5-lobed and yellow, with whitish hairs on the upper 3 stamens only; borne in tall, dense spikes, sometimes with side branches (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are egg-shaped capsules. LEAVES are ovate and woolly; form a basal rosette in 1st year from which tall, leafy stalks arise in 2nd. STATUS-Widespread and locally common.
