Grows on cultivated soil and disturbed ground, typically in dry locations. FLOWERS are 15-20mm long and pinkish purple with a hairy lip and long corolla tube; borne in widely spaced whorls (Mar-Nov). Only a few flowers in a given whorl open at any one time, and some remain small and closed. FRUITS are nutlets. LEAVES are rounded and blunt-toothed, the upper ones almost unstalked. STATUS-Widespread but only locally common and least so in the N.
