California buckeye Aesculus californica (Hippocastanaceae) HEIGHT to 13m. Broad, spreading and domed deciduous tree. BARK Greyish pink and smooth. BRANCHES Upright to level; buds are sticky. LEAVES Small and palmate with 5-7 leaflets, each 5-10cm long and dark glossy green. REPRODUCTIVE PARTS Flowers are whitish, sometimes flushed pink, and fragrant; borne in ‘candles’ in early summer. Fruits have rough, but not spiny, husks. STATUS AND DISTRIBUTION Native of California, planted here occasionally for ornament.
