Klaus Bjerre is one of Denmark’s leading wildlife photographers, specialising in birds. He has a lifelong interest in the birds of Israel, particularly those that migrate through the region, and is currently working on a book to celebrate this passion. In addition, his seabird photography is spectacular.

  • Turnstone Arenaria interpres L 23cm. Pugnacious wader with stout, triangular bill, used to turn stones in search of invertebrates. Feeds unobtrusively. All birds have reddish orange legs and black and white wing pattern in flight. Sexes are similar. Adult has orange-red on back, white underparts and bold black and white markings on head. Males have brighter back colours than females and more distinct black head markings. Winter adult has grey-brown upperparts, the head and neck. Breast is marked with blackish band that shows a clear demarcation from white underparts. Juvenile is similar to winter adult but upperparts are paler and back feathers have pale fringes. Voice Utters a rolling tuk-ut-ut in flight. Status Non-breeding visitor to coasts. Widespread and common.

  • Ruff Philomachus pugnax L 23-29cm. Variable wader but rather small head is a consistent feature. Has slightly downcurved bill, orange-yellow legs and, in flight, narrow white wingbar and white sides to rump. Male is smaller than female and, in breeding season, has unique head decorations. Adult male in summer has brownish upperparts, many feathers with black tips and bars. On breeding grounds, briefly has facial warts and variably coloured ruff and crest feathers. Adult female in summer has grey-brown upperparts, many feathers with dark tips and bars; underparts are pale. Winter adult has rather uniform grey-brown upperparts and pale underparts. Juvenile recalls winter adult but has buff suffusion and scaly-looking back. Voice Mostly silent. Status Rare breeding species on freshwater wetlands. Fairly common passage migrant, favouring coastal freshwater pools; scarce in winter.

  • Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus - Male. L 14cm. Colourful Robin-sized bird. Dark-centred red tail is pumped up and down when perched. Sexes are dissimilar. Adult male has grey back, nape and crown, black face and throat, and orange-red underparts (most colourful on breast). Note white forehead and supercilium. Adult female has grey-brown upperparts and head, and orange wash to pale underparts. 1st winter birds recall respective adult plumages but feathers have pale margins. Voice Utters a soft huiit call. Song is tuneful but melancholy. Status Locally common summer visitor to open woodland with plenty of tree holes for nesting and limited ground cover.

  • Mealy Redpoll - Carduelis flammea.  Confusingly, redpoll classification has changed in recent years. Formerly, both the Mealy Redpoll and the bird now referred to as Lesser Redpoll were treated as races of the Common Redpoll complex; now they are considered to be separate species. But here they are treated as a single entry. The Mealy Redpoll Carduelis flammea is appreciably paler in all plumages than the Lesser Redpoll. Lessers are present here all year (although many migrate to mainland Europe in winter). Mealys are exclusively winter visitors, from N Europe.

Sexes are similar. Adult in summer has red neck and upper breast; head has white-bordered pale grey cheeks and black cap. Upperparts otherwise grey-brown and underparts whitish with grey streaks on flanks. In winter, loses neck colours but often retains hint of reddish collar. Cheek pattern is less well defined and ear coverts are grubby. Juvenile is similar to winter adult with more extensive red on neck. Voice Mostly silent. Status Scarce winter visitor to sheltered inshore seas and estuaries; occasional on inland lakes and reservoirs.

  • Red Kite Milvus milvus W 145-165cm. Graceful raptor, identified in flight by deeply forked tail (twisted to aid flight control) and long, bowed wings. Seldom spends much time on ground but sometimes perches in trees. Sexes are similar. Adult has pale grey head but otherwise mainly reddish brown plumage. Eye, base of bill and legs are yellow. In flight from below, note reddish brown body and underwing coverts, silvery grey tail and patch on primaries, and otherwise dark wings. From above, tail appears red while reddish brown back and wing coverts contrast with dark flight feathers. Juvenile resembles dull adult with pale margins to wing covert feathers. Voice Utters shrill calls in flight, like somebody whistling for their dog. Status As recently as late 1980’s, confined to central Wales. Re-introduction programmes mean it is now very locally common in England and Scotland as well.
